Mad Cool Festival 2026 once again proved why it remains one of Europe’s most exciting music festivals, bringing together an eclectic lineup of international stars who delivered unforgettable performances. Among the weekend’s highlights, Lorde, Zara Larsson, Florence + The Machine, and Halsey each offered a completely different experience, showcasing the diversity that defines the festival.
Lorde: Minimalism at Its Most Powerful
Lorde took to the stage with complete confidence, immediately surprising the audience by opening with an unreleased song before seamlessly transitioning into her breakthrough hit, Royals. The unexpected introduction instantly captivated the crowd and set the tone for one of the festival’s most intimate performances.
The New Zealand artist then shifted the focus to her latest project, Virgin, performing its lead single What Was That and getting the audience dancing from the very first chorus. Her production was intentionally minimalist yet visually striking, built around stacked boxes wrapped in LED screens that elevated her above the stage while displaying immersive visuals.
Although her set had to be shortened, the closing moments became one of the festival’s defining memories. As Lorde performed Ribs against the backdrop of a stunning sunset, the atmosphere turned almost cinematic, creating an emotional finale that left a lasting impression on her fans.
Zara Larsson: Pure Pop Energy
Zara Larsson wasted no time making an impact, opening with Midnight Sun and immediately commanding the audience’s attention. Her natural charisma never faded throughout the performance, keeping the crowd engaged from beginning to end.
The Swedish pop star celebrated every stage of her career by mixing her biggest hits with newer material, creating a setlist that had the entire audience singing along regardless of when they had discovered her music. One of the most memorable moments came during Lush Life, when she invited a fan on stage to dance with her, adding a spontaneous and heartfelt touch to the show.
Visually, Zara’s performance was equally impressive. An elaborate physical stage design blended seamlessly with large-scale digital visuals, creating a unique world that perfectly complemented her vibrant pop aesthetic.
Florence + The Machine: A Spellbinding Headline Performance
As one of the festival’s headliners, Florence + The Machine arrived with enormous expectations—and somehow exceeded every one of them. Florence Welch’s magnetic stage presence established an immediate connection with the audience, who spent the next ninety minutes singing, jumping, and completely surrendering to the performance.
While the tour focused on the band’s latest album, Everybody Scream, there was still plenty of room for beloved classics including Shake It Out, Hunger, and fan favourite Which Witch. Watching Florence perform felt almost supernatural, as if she were casting a spell over the crowd. Fittingly, flashes of lightning appeared in the sky just as she began singing, adding an almost mythical atmosphere to the concert.
The emotional peak came during Dog Days Are Over, when Florence asked everyone to put away their phones and simply live the moment. The audience embraced her request without hesitation, filling the venue with raised hands, dancing bodies, and genuine human connection—a rare and unforgettable festival moment.
Halsey: A Fearless Festival Opener
Halsey had the challenging task of opening Friday’s programme in front of a crowd largely made up of fans waiting for Twenty One Pilots. Initially, the audience seemed hesitant to engage, prompting Halsey herself to call them out for standing still rather than dancing.
Far from being discouraged, she transformed the situation through sheer determination and undeniable stage presence. Her performance demanded attention, proving why she remains one of the most compelling live performers of her generation.
Musically, the set revisited her entire catalogue through a heavier, rock-oriented lens that reflected the direction of her two most recent projects while hinting at what may come next. Honest, fearless, and unapologetically herself, Halsey demonstrated the qualities of a complete artist. It was the kind of performance that reminds you why she is an essential live act—one that every music fan should experience at least once.
